Celebrate Free Comic Book Day on May 1st

It’s that time of year again—time to open the windows, plant the flowers, till the garden, and introduce someone to the joy of comics. May 1st is Free Comic Book Day, with comic shops around the country celebrating by participating.

Here in the Detroit area, Clawson’s Warp 9 Comics will be opening their doors to give away comic books.

“The wide array of comic books being published today ensures that readers of all ages—children, teens, and adults—can find something appropriate that will stir their imaginations,” says Lauren Becker, Owner of Warp 9 Comics and Collectibles.

“We at Warp 9 want to spread the word that comics are perfect for today’s times,” Becker continued. “Comic books and graphic novels are considered hip, hot and smart.” Comic Books have propelled to the front ranks of pop culture, many being adapted into movies. The first weekend of May is going to be a big day in the comic book world.”

Comics culture is a huge part of many Icrontian’s lives. Be sure to introduce a kid (or adult) to comics tomorrow. Take a Saturday trip to your local participating shop and have a blast.

BuddyJ I'm in. Gonna hit New World Comics in OKC. FCBD is one of my favorite holidays, right after Record Store Day.

    coldalarm I'm in.
Got my transport booked for tomorrow (I set off in 9hrs) and I'm topping it off with a viewing of Iron Man 2. Looks like it'll be better than last year, although that's not hard to beat. Not even Wade Wilson could have salvaged that :(
  3. coldalarm
coldalarm I've not read them yet, but my haul is a bit pathetic.
Can't say I was overwhelmed by it this year, and I think I accidentally stole a sampler (25 cents Dark Horse 20th Anniversary thing). Whoopsie.
  4. RyanMM
RyanMM Don't forget Detroit Comics in Ferndale for those near the Woodward corridor!
  5. Koreish
Koreish I wish I had known this. Many a Dark Horse comic would have been "purchased".
  6. coldalarm
coldalarm There's always next year, Koreish.
I think I've been going to it for the past few years now. Think this must have been my third or fourth time.
